Drinking while dreaming – Dreaming about drinking
Dreaming about drinking is common for alcoholics who’ve maintained sobriety.
Dreaming about drinking is a common psychological withdraw symptom for many alcoholics. Since drinking has been a major part of the alcoholics life its impossible to not experience hangups along the way. Dreaming about huge changes in our lives is one way for us to re-adjust to a sense of normalcy.
When drinking in my dreams I was fully aware of my sobriety but that didn’t matter to me. When I woke up in morning I would have panic attacks thinking that I actually relapsed and started drinking again. I was so thankful that I didn’t but it seamed all to real to me. Sometimes I even woke up with what felt like a hangover. I hated having those dreams at first but looking back I’m thankful because it gave me a chance to face those fears.
Facing our fears
Our dreams help us face our fears that we’ve been throwing on the back burner. Its human nature to protect ourselves from things that may hurt us. But in order to grow we need to experience closure. Our fears are not the fear of the problem but fear of what the outcome may be.
For example small children are always shy when a stranger wants to talk to them. As children we would hide behind someones legs in fear of what would happen if they were to talk to them. Eventually as time goes on the child will be encouraged to face that fear and when they do nothing bad usually happens. After two or three new experiences the child over comes that fear. It doesn’t matter how young or old we are everyone has the option to face their fears or run away from them.
When a recovering alcoholic has dreams about drinking its just a way for them to realize relapse can happen.
